Meet Destiny, Author Of Confession of the Mind

What services do you provide?

I am a writer and I provide introspective thought through my work. I had my first book, Confession of the Mind: A Collection of Poetry & Prose, published in 2017.  I am currently working on my second book, which will be a novel.

What sparked the start of your business? How has the journey been?

I loved reading and writing since I was a little girl. As I got older I realized that people would often resonate with my poetry or posts online and appreciated my perspective on various topics. I was inspired to publish my work when I witnessed a family friend do the same a year before. I went into the process completely blind at first, but found my footing after awhile. I decided to self publish because I enjoyed the control over content, the pace and the options afforded. It took me about half a year to piece everything together and make my book available for purchase. I can’t even recall the number of times I had to review and resubmit. Nothing in life is perfect obviously, but I damn near wanted to produce such. Insert that Erykah Badu quote here.

It’s been about 3 years since my book’s release and it still feels surreal to hear & see praise for my work. Confession of the Mind was an extremely personal collection and it was such a big deal for me, a private person, to bare my own emotions, feelings and experiences for public consumption. However, I felt it was important to share my story & thoughts in an effort to heal my own wounds and ultimately help someone else do the same. My main goal in life is to empower people & help them help themselves, whether that be through my writing or through my actions as a social worker

What’s something you think people should know about your industry?

Authenticity in whatever industry goes a long way. People want to read books that they can connect with and take something away from. The book industry is fairly easy to get into, but much of the work will fall on your shoulders unless you sign with a publisher, so be prepared and calculated throughout your process. Also, having an established social media platform will help you gain attention and an immediate audience.

What advice do you have for fellow entrepreneurs?

Don’t be afraid to fail. It sounds cliche as hell but it’s so very true. You learn more from your mistakes and “failures” than you do your wins. Additionally, do things you have a passion for and remember your “why” as an professional.
